SUMMARY:Caritas Deaf Service 50th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Deaf people have been coming to signed and interpreted Masses on the Cathedral complex since before the second World War\, probably longer.  In 1976 the ministry with the Deaf Community officially became part of the Diocese. \nIn 1976 we were called Ephphatha and led by Fr Peter Sharp.  Over the years we have been Social and Pastoral Action\, Westminster Diocese Deaf Service and now Caritas Deaf Service and the leadership over the years has changed too\, but our mission has remained the same to serve the Deaf Community and raise the awareness of the skills and talents that Deaf people have to share with the wider Catholic Community. \nCome and join us for our celebration Mass in Westminster Cathedral on Saturday 26th September at 2p.m. celebrated by Bishop Paul McAleenan.  Bishop Paul will also be joined by many of our priests with signing skills for a Mass in Word and Sign. \n

SUMMARY:Knife Crime Reduction Forum: Small acts\, wider impact
DESCRIPTION:Knife Crime Reduction Forum: Small acts\, wider impact – what can we do about knife crime? \nCaritas Westminster\, Justice & Peace team of St Mellitus RC Church\, Tollington Park\, and Operation Forgiveness are hosting their second online event on knife crime on 22 October\, 7.00–8.30pm. \nFollowing the hugely positive response to our first event\, this session will explore practical ways parishes and schools can take action\, including knife bins\, banners and vigils. \nDuring the evening\, we will also hear from speaker Jason O’Shea\, Ministry Leader at Operation Forgiveness\, a programme which works with churches and schools to help prevent youth violence and support young people. Operation Forgiveness trains local churches to deliver early-intervention knife-crime and youth violence workshops in local schools. \nThe event is open to everyone across the Diocese\, and we would love to see as many people as possible join the conversation. \nPlease spread the word in your parish\, school and community\, so people who care about this important issue can attend. \nOnline meeting link will be sent to you a few days ahead of the meeting.

SUMMARY:"It does matter" - online session with the Deaf Service
DESCRIPTION:According to RNID\, at least 12 million people in the UK are deaf or have hearing loss\, representing around 1 in 5 adults.\n\nInspired by RNID’s It Does Matter report\, this session will explore the experiences of those who the Caritas Deaf Services works with and supports\, as well as how they continue to advocate for those who are Deaf\, Deafblind\, hard of hearing.\n\nTogether\, we will explore how churches can become more welcoming\, accessible\, and inclusive\, while celebrating the contribution and commitment of the Deaf Service. The session will offer practical insights\, raise awareness of the barriers that people can face\, and encourage us all to play our part in ensuring that everyone feels welcomed\, valued\, and able to participate fully.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Surface: Understanding Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Trauma can affect how people experience the world\, relate to others and respond in situations that may seem ordinary to us. As volunteers\, we may encounter people affected by trauma without necessarily knowing what they have experienced. \nThis accessible and practical session will help us look beyond the surface of behaviour to better understand what may be happening underneath. We’ll explore what trauma is\, how it can affect people\, and what it means to become more trauma-informed in the way we support and interact with others — responding in ways that promote safety\, dignity and trust.\nThe session is open to volunteers across our projects and may be particularly valuable for those volunteering in homelessness projects\, foodbanks and other settings where they are more likely to encounter people who have experienced trauma. \nNikki Dhillon Keane is a BACP-accredited therapist (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy)\, clinical supervisor\, trainer and writer with over 20 years’ experience working with survivors of domestic abuse\, sexual violence and trauma. Nikki is also Head of Caritas Hope\, which supports survivors of abuse and exploitation\, and has extensive experience delivering training in trauma-informed approaches. \nNo previous knowledge is needed. The session is about building awareness and confidence\, and giving volunteers practical ways to become more trauma-informed — not about becoming trauma specialists. \n18 November – 7.00–9.30pm\nWith Nikki Dhillon Keane
