Providing garden activities and experiences to benefit people living with Dementia

Do you enjoy being outside? Do you enjoy making a difference? Come and volunteer with us today! This is a chance to work in a beautiful and welcoming place where you can.

The Red Shed provides gardening activities for people living with dementia and their carers. We run Garden Clubs throughout the week at our fully accessible and dementia friendly garden in Stevenage.

Our volunteers work alongside workshop leaders to ensure that everyone is able to join in and that the garden is well maintained and looks fabulous throughout the year. Our volunteers are a crucial part of The Red Shed Team, making a huge contribution to the success of our work.

You do not need to be an expert gardener to become part of our team; so long as you enjoy being outside and chatting with a wide range people, you’ll be perfect for this role.

Volunteers responsibilities could include:

– Joining in with social times
– Assisting with setting up sessions and clearing away afterwards
– Helping participants to carry out their activity, chatting as you work
– Providing a listening ear and chatting with carers, who welcome the opportunity for a conversation general garden tasks to maintain the site

Induction, training and meetings with fellow volunteers are offered as well as different social gatherings including all staff, volunteers and Garden Club participants.

Volunteers benefit hugely from volunteering with us.

You will swiftly become a part of the living community that is The Red Shed and enjoy the social contacts, the peace of the garden and maybe learn or pass on new gardening or craft skills. If your own goals are to move on to a new role beyond volunteering – working or studying perhaps – then you will develop a range of skills that will help, including an understanding of how to work and communicate with a wide range of people. There will be opportunities to use initiative and demonstrate commitment and you will show that you are reliable, all skills that are valuable in wider life. Other volunteers may want to use their existing skills and experience in a new way – and perhaps experience something new.

Most of all, we believe you will enjoy your sessions here at The Red Shed!
