A new book has been launched, about the experiences of survivors of human trafficking and modern slavery, edited by Carole Murphy and Runa Lazzarino. Karen Anstiss, Service manager of Caritas Bakhita House, contributed with an article about the journey of victims and Bakhita House’s therapeutic response.
“This book traces the journey of victims/survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking into and within the UK, from recruitment to representation to (re)integration. … Rooted in diverse practitioner experience, disciplines and empirical research, this book bridges the experience-research-practice-policy gap by bringing to the fore survivors’ voices. In doing so, it offers crucial suggestions for better public awareness, policies and practices that will impact interventions in the UK and beyond.”
This book was launched on the 19th May at a Conference at the Bakhita Centre in St. Mary’s University Twickenham, at which Caritas Bakhita House had a strong presence. Melisa our drama therapist gave an input, Lorraine our Music therapist took part and our art teacher John did also a workshop in lino cutting. We also had a table to sell produce of Bakhita House like jam and membrillo, home roasted coffee, cordials and cards.
The book cover is a lino print which was created in our art class facilitated by John our art teacher. At the book launch John was given the opportunity to share how he has approached the task involving all the creative potential of our guests.
