Herts Welcomes Refugees
Welcoming and supporting refugees in Hertfordshire
Volunteers needed to welcome and support refugee families and asylum seekers. Roles include befriending, teaching English and working as a team to organise events.
Befriender – supporting a family or individual to settle into their new community – practising English, assistance with every day situations such as shopping, library visits, school enrolment.
ESOL/English language teachers – to lead or assist with English classes, small groups or 1:1 language support.
Team member volunteering at asylum seeker hotels – supporting with teaching English to adults and children (we can provide training), helping with events and activities such as art classes, cookery, outings.
Delivering bicycles and other goods across the county – assisting our bike coordinator with re-homing second-hand bikes to asylum seekers and refugees, collecting and delivering donations of clothing and furniture
Bookkeeping support / Treasurer
IT Support – someone proficient in Microsoft to support volunteers with IT queries they might have
We have opportunities across Hertfordshire but there is a particular need in the following areas:
Hemel Hempstead – befrienders, English teachers
Welwyn/Hatfield – befrienders, English teachers, team members
Broxbourne – befrienders, English teachers, team members
Watford & Three Rivers – befrienders, English teachers
North Herts & Stevenage – befrienders, English teachers, team members
Hertsmere / St Albans – befrienders, English teachers
East Herts – English teachers, befrienders
We provide an induction for new volunteers. We will assist volunteers with getting a DBS certificate. We have a buddy system and run regular group sessions where our volunteers can get together to share ideas.
