Work of talented artists and crafters on display to celebrate Learning Disability Week

|

Each year, Learning Disability Week takes place in the third week of June and is a chance to remember and celebrate what those with intellectual and learning disabilities can contribute. Louise Cook, Caritas Westminster’s Communications Officer, travelled to Caritas St Joseph’s Lifelong Learning Centre in Hendon to see a special exhibition.

On Tuesday 20th June, on a warm evening, bright and fresh after the recent rain, I travelled to Hendon to see the results of the hard work of our students at St Joseph’s and the Connect@ Centres in Hounslow and Feltham.

Having seen some of the artwork and ceramics last year at Syon House I knew I would be in for a treat. I was particularly struck by the individuality expressed by the artists and creators, and the quirky designs such as the papier-mache piggy banks. Garden furniture and planters made by students were also on display. The items were on sale and I came home with a pen pot for organising my kids’ paint brushes and pencils, and a bar of soap as a gift for a friend. I’m also planning on requesting a made-to-measure planter for my garden.

Why not attend the fundraising barbecue at Caritas St Joseph’s on 15 July, where you should get a chance to view some of the arts and crafts for yourself. If you are interested in buying any of the items, please contact Thushari or Sepi.
